Dr. Peter Kareiva


Dr. Peter Kareiva is the president and CEO of the Aquarium of the Pacific. Previously, he was director of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA, as well as the Pritzker Distinguished Professor in Environment & Sustainability. Before coming to UCLA, Peter was the Chief Scientist and Vice President of The Nature Conservancy. Peter is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of The National Academy of Sciences. His current research concerns the connection between humans and nature, and the varied ways people of different cultures value nature, as well as inequities in access to nature and decent environments.

He has been published widely in academic journals and is the author or co-author of many books, including Conservation Science: Balancing the Needs of People and Nature, Natural Capital: Theory & Practice of Mapping Ecosystem Services, and The Importance of Species: Perspectives on Expendability and Triage.
